About Me

I was born the 7th of May, 1953 at the Quicksand Lumber Mill in Breathitt County, Ky. In a small Mill house, nestled between two ridges, my Mom's Labor began.

It had been raining for several days and still raining hard as Dad left the house that spring morning on horseback to fetch the midwife. On the return, the midwife, Becky Bays, fell off her horse crossing a raging creek. My Dad jumped in after her and managed to drag her to shore. But by the time they walked in the Mill house I was already born.

I was Mom’s first daughter. But I was third on the list of the daughters of my father.

That Mill and the houses nestled around them are no longer there. After I was a married woman with two grown children did I see the place I had heard so much of. Mom, Dad and I took a trip back there so they could show me where I was born.

Little was left of the place I spent my first year of life. Only the skeletons of a few houses, and stones from the fireplaces and house sites.

My Mom passed away three years ago this past April and at her passing I lost a small piece of my soul. Mom was born in April and she died in April so needless to say…April is a sad month for me.
I envy those whose Mother still lives and I sympathize with those that don’t.
